A more active lifestyle often means spending a lot of time outside in bright sunshine. We carry many makes and models of sunglasses to suit every taste, activity and budget. Although sunglasses have traditionally been marketed as fashion items, they are also important health protective devices. Using sunglasses and a hat with a wide brim can help to protect your eyes and skin from the damaging effects of sun exposure.
Sunglasses not only make vision more comfortable by cutting the glare of the midday sun, but they also protect the eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and in some circumstances, sharpen vision. In order to adequately protect the eyes sunglasses should block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Frames can be divided into two main types: plastic and metal.
- Plastic Frames: A plastic frame is light and most of them are thicker and do not have nose pads. There are three types of plastic frames:
- Acetate - It's a solid and glossy plastic. Most of these frames will have metal wire inside the plastic temple in order to provide strength and ease in fitting. They also need heating when fitting and adjusting.
- Optyl - This type of frame is translucent and very glossy. There are many attractive color such as pink, blue, purple, gray, yellow, and green. The weight is lighter than other plastics. There is no metal wire inside the temple. It also needs heating when fitting and adjusting.
- Carbon - Most carbon frames are black and brown. This frame type is highly flexible and some designs also have nose pads. The temple may be made of color coated metal with contrast color.
- Metal Frames: Most of these frames are thin and have nose pads which are adjustable. There are several metals used for frame production. The weight of the frame is based on the raw material. We can differentiate metal frames into five types as follows:
- Enameled Metal - Most of these frame types are made of color plated tungsten or ordinary metal. The surface may be glossy or matted according to the designers.
- Nickel Silver - Most of the frames in the market are made of this kind of metal. Nickel silver is able to be enameled with various colors. This frame can be decorated with epoxy wire on the eye rim. Nickel can sometimes cause skin reactions in persons with sensitive skin
- Monel - The most commonly used metal in eyewear, monel is more resistant to corrosion than nickel and easier to silver-plate or gold-plate. However, monel still has nickel as a component.
- Stainless Steel - This is a nickel free frame so it is Hypoallergenic. It is usually thinner and lighter weight than monel.
- Titanium and Flexible Titanium - The lifetime will be very long because titanium is rust free and does not corrode when exposed to salty sweat. Another benefit of titanium as a frame is its allergy free (bio-compatible) characteristic. Flexible titanium is a titanium-based alloy with a high "memory" factor that enables a twisted frame to return to its original shape. In addition to making frames extremely durable, the flexible titanium material holds adjustments longer and is lighter in weight than other metal frames.
There are three main styles of rims: full-rim, semi-rimless, and rimless.
Full-Rim
- Metal frames are held together with screws, requiring occasional tightening.
- Plastic frames hold the lenses without screws, requiring little or no maintenance other than an occasional realignment of the temples.
- All lens materials are available in this style.
Semi-Rimless (also referred to as "grooved rimless")
- Available in both metal and plastic.
- Usually indicated by a nylon cord stretched beneath the eyeglass lens.
- Trivex or Polycarbonate is recommended to prevent lens chipping.
- Glass lenses are not available in this style.
Rimless (also referred to as "drill mount" or "3-piece mount")
- Lenses in these frames are held by screws or compression devices.
- Rimless frames can give the appearance of not wearing glasses.
- Trivex lenses are recommended.
- Glass lenses are not available in this style.

Just as "one-size-fits-all" doesn't always fit, neither does one pair of eyeglasses for all situations. There are eyeglass lenses available that are specifically manufactured to perform specific duties. For example, individuals who spend a lot of time on the computer may benefit from having more than just general use glasses.

For example, individuals who spend a lot of time on the computer may benefit from having more than just general use glasses.
Computer Glasses: If you spend much time in front of a computer, you probably already know that eye strain, fatigue and muscle strains are common problems associated with prolonged computer use. "Computer glasses" have lenses that are specially-designed to maximize your vision at the intermediate and close-up distances you use during computer work. A pair of single vision computer glasses gives you a large viewing area for seeing objects on your desk. Several different types of multifocals are also available to give you clear monitor-viewing vision through the top of the lenses while giving you clear reading vision through the bottom. Regardless of your workstation arrangement, we likely have a lens combination that will enhance your comfort and maximize your productivity.
Driving Glasses: Driving glasses come in two different categories: sunglasses designed specifically for driving and clear prescription driving glasses. Many sunglasses made for driving feature polarized lenses to reduce glare and special tints to enhance contrast for safer, more comfortable vision on the road on sunny days. Eyeglasses for night driving should include your distance prescription and anti-reflective coating to reduce the glare from lights and allow more light to reach your eyes for better vision on dark roadways.
Sports/AthleticEyewear: Sport-specific eyewear can enhance performance by improving visual clarity while protecting your eyes from injury. Whether you are playing basketball, racquetball, shooting, playing golf, or cycling we have a style that will suit your needs.
Safety Eyewear: At Elegant Optics we care about the safety of your eyes and offer a wide selection of safety frames for all types of industrial jobs and activities. Using lawn mowers, power trimmers, grinding tools and other power tools can all cause serious eye injuries from high-speed projectiles. Even tasks as simple as hammering a nail can cause flying debris. Safety glasses are a must for these activities. All of our safety eyeglasses are OSHA approved. We are now also a provider for BNSF safety eyewear.
What is the best type of lens for you?
At Elegant Optics we offer the latest in spectacle lenses and materials. Whether you need single vision, bifocals or trifocals, glasses just for computer work, for your occupation, or recreation, our doctors along with our skilled opticians can help you determine the best type of lens for you. Elegant Optics has an extensive selection of lens and material types made with the latest technologies.
Types of Lenses We Offer:
- Single Vision: Provides clear vision at a single focal length. Most commonly distance or reading up close.
- Bifocal: Flat top bifocals are designed so that the upper portion of the lens is for distance and the half moon is for normal reading distance (approx. 40cm).
- Trifocal: Trifocals are designed so that the top is the distance and the half moon is the reading distance. The intermediate ribbon allows one to see at an intermediate distance such as a computer monitor or groceries on a shelf.
- Progressive (or PAL): No-line multi-focal lens. A Progressive lens is the most functional lens. The upper portion of the lens is designed for distance. The bifocal increases in power as you travel from the top of the lens to the bottom. This design allows for good vision at a wide variety of distances. Progressive lenses are very popular in that they are cosmetically pleasing.
Note: Not all progressives are treated equally! Progressive lenses are available in several widths--typically the wider channel progressives allow for ease of adaptation. With newer technology progressive lenses your viewing area can now be increased when compared to older generation lenses.
Types of Lens Materials We Offer
- Plastic (CR-39): This is a standard thickness lens which is widely used.
- Polycarbonate: Thin, light-weight, and impact resistant. Polycarbonate lenses are an excellent choice for active lifestyles, children and safety glasses. This lens is recommended for high prescriptions. Polycarbonate lenses are thinner and lighter than regular plastic lenses (CR-39). This lens also is highly impact resistant and is suggested for children, and any hobby or career where eye protection is required. This lens, although impact resistant, is more easily scratched.
- Glass: This lens is recommended for those who easily scratch lenses. Glass has inherent scratch resistance and UV protection, but is heavier and more prone to breakage.
- High-Index: A lens that is lighter, thinner and has excellent optical quality. Because these lenses are so thin, High-Index lenses are ideal for patients requiring higher power prescriptions or those who desire thinner more attractive lenses.
- Mid index: Mid-index materials are thinner than regular glass or plastic but not as thin as high-index materials.
- Trivex: Trivex is a relative newcomer that possesses the UV blocking properties and shatter resistance of polycarbonate while at the same time offering superior optical quality and a slightly lower density. Trivex is a lab favorite for use in rimless frames, due to the ease with which it can be drilled as well as its resistance to cracking around the drill holes.
Treatments, Coatings, and Other Options
- Anti-reflective Coating: Reduces the glare from light to help improve your vision, especially at night. It also reduces the reflections on the lens, so your eyes can be seen. This coating is suggested to prevent night glare and computer glare.
- Scratch Resistant Coating: A clear hard coating applied to the front and back of the lens to reduce scratches. To prevent scratches, use 100% cotton to clean your lenses. Never use paper products to clean your lenses.
Note: Many lenses such as polycarbonate, hi-index and glass have a "built-in scratch coat
- Ultra Violet Coating: UV coating helps to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays. Overexposure to ultraviolet light is thought to be a contributor to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems. UV coating is invisible and does not change the appearance of your lenses.
- Color Tinting: Lenses can be tinted almost any color of the rainbow. Color tinting is sometimes used to improve contrast or simply as a fashion statement.
- Photogray/Photobrown: Photogray is a glass lens which darkens in the sunlight. It is activated by UV radiation. These lenses do not darken fully when driving, because the windshield absorbs much of the UV radiation. It is available in gray and brown.
- Transitions: This lens is similar to photogray, but is constructed of plastic. This lens is much lighter than the glass photogray lens. Advancements in this lens have made it a very popular option due to its speed in lightening / darkening and its virtually clear appearance indoors.
- Polarized: This lens is very popular among fishermen as it cancels glare coming from the water's surface.
On-site Cutting and Edging
We stock a large supply of scratch resistant plastic and polycarbonate lenses and in some cases are able to provide same day service or emergency glasses in the case or unrepairable or lost glasses. In some cases we can even cut your existing lenses down to fit another frame.
